The Forest Stewardship Council® is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.
Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC® is a pioneer forum where the global consensus on responsible forest management convenes and through democratic process effects solutions to the pressures facing the world’s forests and forest-dependent communities.
FSC® certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment, as well as providing ongoing business value. The FSC® label ensures that the forest products used are from responsibly harvested and verified sources.
City Forests was the first major forest owner in the South Island to achieve Forest Stewardship Council® certification and the Company is committed to maintaining FSC® certification. This was awarded in 2000, then re-audited in 2005. The second re-audit was completed in 2010 and a third in 2015. It is a certification of Forest Management (certificate # SGS-FM/COC-000549).
FSC® was one of the first steps of the company’s strategy to add greater value to its business. The company continues to improve its knowledge and management of environmental, heritage and cultural issues with its forests.
