General Safety and Forest Hazards

To promote safety in the forest the following are some requirements and tips for entry into City Forests Estate.

General Safety

The following requirements are to be complied with by each party:

  • No access is allowed to areas sign posted "OPERATIONAL AREA".
  • Unauthorised removal of forest produce is not permitted.
  • Firearms / weapons and hunting are not permitted unless a permit is first obtained.
  • All members of your party, especially any children, are to be instructed not to climb on any piles of stacked logs or logs which have been pushed over the bank off a skid site.
  • In an emergency dial 111

General Hazards

  • Be aware that other individuals or groups may be using the forest both legally and illegally. They may be on foot, bicycles or motorised.
  • In the event of high winds, trees can uproot or branches, tree tops and cones may dislodge, which can endanger people or animals. If these conditions prevail - leave the forest immediately.
  • Road conditions with regard to washouts, potholes, deeply rutted tracks, etc change following heavy rain and care should be taken. A speed restriction of 50 kmph is applied to forest roads.
  • Please be advised that there are sometimes possum trapping and poisoning operations in the forest, with gin traps set at the base of some trees, bait stations containing poison baits and possibly cyanide poison. Cyanide poison is usually mixed with flour and would be at the base of a tree.

General Conditions

  • Do not touch any logging equipment left on site.
  • The lighting of fires at any time is totally prohibited. Caution must be taken not to cause a fire.
  • No camping is permitted unless specifically approved as a condition on a permit.
