City Forests: Forest Recreation and Activities Resources

City Forests offers a wide variety of forest recreational resources to the public of Otago and Dunedin, and other visitors to the region.

Lake Mahingarangi, which is adjacent to the Waipori Forest, is a well-known high country fishing lake surrounded by tussock farmland and plantation forest. The Waipori River, the outlet of Lake Mahinerangi, also has some good fishing spots.

There are five hunting blocks within the forests, four in the Waipori Forest and one in the Ferny Hill Forest. All blocks have good numbers of animals, both deer and pigs and are popular hunting spots. Permits are available for hunting access, and applications can be obtained from our office directly, or downloaded from this web site.

We have a number of walking tracks within our forests. Crystal Falls walking track takes you through native beech forest near the Waipori Falls Village to the Crystal Falls that feed into the Waipori River. Flagstaff Creek walking track in Flagstaff Forest takes you to the site of the original Silverstream water supply operation and through some original plantings of introduced plantation species. Flagstaff Creek walking track is located off Three Mile Hill Road.

The forests also offer great trails and tracks for walking, horse riding, mountain biking and there are frequently organised events such as rally car and trial bike races (the latter events require permit access).
