City Forests: Sustainable Forest Management

We produce an extensive range of high quality NZ wood and forest products using sustainable forest management practices in southern New Zealand.  We have had FSCTM certification for over 10 years

In 2006 City Forests celebrated 100 years of Dunedin city's involvement in forestry (view our press release)

City Forests Limited owns and manages a Dry-mill wood processing plant and approximately 16,100ha of plantation forest located in the Otago province at the southern end of the South Island, New Zealand. Our mill and all of our forests are located within a 70km radius of the city of Dunedin. Radiata pine makes up 87% of the planted forest area, with the majority of the balance being Douglas-fir and Cypress.

Important Notices and News

Forest Certification Renewed

Following a full audit earlier in 2010 our Forest Stewardship CouncilTM forest certification was renewed for a further five years.  See more details.

Flagstaff Forest Walking Tracks

The lower section of the Flagstaff walking track is closed until further notice due to severe damage to the footbridge at the end of Flagstaff Creek.  Walkers may still access the section from the firewood yard (opposite Taieri lookout) down to the creek itself.  Please take care when using this track.

Safety Messages for Forest Users

If you wish to enter any of our forests, please take note of the safety messages on this website, and obtain a permit where requred to do so.

Hunting Permits

Hunters: Ferny Hill Forest is closed for Hunting.  Hunting Permits for a new area in Silverpeaks Forest will be available on application to our office.

Change of Locked Gate Location (Silverpeaks Forest)

Due to increasing problems with unauthorised and dangerous activity in Silverpeaks Forest we have reluctantly decided to reduce casual vehicle access along Mountain Track by shifting the locked gate south on this road (view map) .  Limited-term entry permits and keys are available on application to our office for recreational users who have a legitimate need to gain vehicle access beyond the locked gate.  Members of the public may continue to access the forest on foot under the usual terms of forest entry.

Fires

Please, if you see any sign of smoke or fire coming from our forests dial 111 to report it.
